Important Information
The Secret Life of Bees is a 302 page novel. Students have until Friday, April 13, to finish reading the book (this is equivalent to reading approximately ten pages a day). Students will then have until Friday, April 20, to complete all Weebly assignments, take the final test, and complete the writing assignment. These dates are tentative and dependent on a number of things. New due dates may be given.

During Reading Responsibilities
While reading this novel, students will be responsible for completing a number of tasks to exhibit mastery of specific learning targets. As each task is complete, students will upload the document to a Livebinder they have created. Once completed with all the tasks, they submit the Livebinder to Ms. Corley for a grade. In addition to maintaining a Livebinder, students will also be responsible for completing periodic reading check quizzes as well as a final test over the novel that addresses many of the same learning targets that the "during reading" tasks address.

Livebinder Instructions
Livebinders.com is a 3-ring binder for the web; it is a place to organize and collect resources. While reading The Secret Life of Bees, you will maintain a livebinder of the assignments for the novel. After we create your personal livebinder in class, it is your responsibility to upload any documents completed during the reading of the novel to your binder before Friday, April 20 (the final due date for all assignments over TSLB). By creating a livebinder, students will not have to work in Google docs but can work in OpenOffice and upload documents directly from OpenOffice to livebinder. It is important that you bookmark the website (www.livebinders.com) as well as remember your username and password for the site.
During Reading Tasks
While reading the novel, you are responsible for completing the following tasks and uploading them to your livebinder:
- Characterization - While reading the novel, locate 10 examples of direct characterization and 10 examples of indirect characterization. Construct a table or chart to record your findings. On the chart, include the example from the text, type of characterization (direct or indirect), and the page number where you found the example.
- Figures of Speech - Throughout the novel locate a total of 15 examples of figurative language. Examples should include at least one of each of the following: onomatopoeia, simile, metaphor, and personification, hyperbole. Again, create a chart to display your information. Include the example, the type of figurative language, and the page number where it can be found.
- Theme - While reading the novel, locate details that support or illustrate each specific theme. For each theme, you should locate at least 3 examples per theme. Create a chart to display the theme, the detail/example from the text, and a justification of why each specific examples illustrates the theme.
- Chapter Summary - For each chapter, write a summary that is no more than 50 words that includes the main points of the chapter as well as the characters involved in each chapter. In addition, since the chapters do not have titles, generate a title for each chapter based on the events then explain the meaning of the title as it fits with each chapter.
- Blog Responses - Throughout the novel, you will need to create a minimum of 20 blog post responses. Responses should include the following: 5 posts - reaction to what you read that day; 5 posts written in the voice of Lily; 5 posts written in the voice of May; 5 about Civil Rights or the treatment of African-Americans
